Background
In an era marked by rapid digital transformation, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) encompasses a wide range of tools and approaches, including learning management systems, mobile learning, simulation, Artificial Intelligence, game-based learning, virtual and augmented reality, and data-driven feedback systems that can significantly enrich the teaching, learning, and assessment of health professionals. In the African context, technology in education is about enabling access, supporting equitable learning opportunities, and preparing future health professionals for digital, complex, and often resource-constrained environments.
The TEL in HPE SIG recognises these dynamics and aims to provide professional development opportunities that foster innovation and critical reflection on the use of technology across diverse health education settings. This includes addressing how technology can support robust and values-driven assessment practices that uphold educational integrity while enhancing learning outcomes.
VISION AND MISSION
The Technology Enhanced Learning in Health Professions Education (TEL in HPE) Special Interest Group (SIG) envisions a vibrant, inclusive community of educators, scholars, and practitioners committed to advancing the meaningful integration of technology in health professions education. Rooted in a shared belief that digital innovation can enhance access, equity, and quality in education, this SIG seeks to create a collaborative space for exploring and shaping the future of teaching, learning, and assessment in diverse health contexts.
Through ongoing engagement with empirical research, critical dialogue, and practice-based insights, the SIG aims to promote the thoughtful and contextually relevant use of technology. It supports professional development, encourages cross-institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration, and fosters a community of practice that values educational integrity, pedagogical innovation, and responsiveness to local and global health education needs.
activities
The SIG will focus on the following core activities to support its mission:
- Annual Workshop at the SAAHE National Conference: A hands-on, interactive session exploring current themes, innovations, and challenges in TEL.
- Two Online Webinars per Year: These virtual events showcase practice-based insights, research findings, and cross-institutional learning opportunities.
